The new Town Flag was adopted in summer of 2004. The flag is designed around the "Therese Bugnet" Rose, our Town Flower. The flag also show our bilingual heritage and national Bilingual Status.
 

Area Overview

The Town of Legal gives the best of both worlds for it's residents. It has the charm of small town with the peace and tranquility you'd expect with local stores and business to supplement this small town living.

The Town of Legal has land for development for industrial, commercial and residential use. Contact the Town office with any questions at 780-961-3773.

Located 50 km north of Edmonton on Highway 651, Legal is a prime agricultural region. Legal has witnessed remarkable growth in the past decade. Town councillors here are justifiably optimistic over the future of Legal, forecasting "more continued, steady growth" for the Town, based on the stability of the agricultural sector and the alternative lifestyle to Edmonton that is available.

The Town of Legal has 2 schools for local children in the area. Legal School offers
education for children K-9 and the Ecole Citadelle offers a french curriculm for children K-9. The English students then would attend Morinville Community High 10 minutes south on highway 2. Francophone students can then attend Maurice Lavallee School in Edmonton with bus service provided.Legal offers preschool for children, the contact number is for the Legal School is (780) 961-3791Ecole Citadelle is (780)961-3557.

Legal offers fully serviced lots starting at about $15,000 which is a great incentive for young families wanting to own their own home and have peace of mind knowing they are raising their families in a safe, quiet friendly community.

The town is full of heritage having added murals around town depicting it's rich heritage. Despite the changes and growth Legal has seen it's still large in it's francophone roots.

Our business licenses are set at a reasonable rates. They are due yearly and are as follows: For a commercial based business the fee is $50.00 , for a homebased business it fee is $75.00, for an out of town business the fee is $100.00 and for a general contractor the fee is $250.00.

The Town of Legal has a volunteer fire department and ambulance service. The
members have extensive training and are highly dedicated to ensuring the highest quality of services they can.

Location

The Town of Legal is located in the County of Sturgeon, 50 km north of Edmonton on Highway 651.It is just 3 km east of Highway 2, the province's main north-south artery.
 

Economic Base

Originally a service centre for the surrounding agricultural community, today Legal also serves as a popular satellite community to Edmonton.Most of the Town's workforce commute to either Edmonton or St. Albert to work. However the local companies do employe a substancial amount of the town's residence.

Water Supply
The source of water is a direct water line from Edmonton. Waste Management Sewage treatment is provided by a lagoon consisting of 4 short and 2 long detention ponds.

Industrial, commercial and residential garbage is collected weekly. Commercial and residential recycling is collected weekly.

Legal is served by a Canadian National Railway branch line.

The main connecting highways are Highway 2 and Secondary Highway 651.Legal is also accessible by Highway 28 and Secondary Highway 803.

Bus Services
Greyhound Bus Lines provides regularly scheduled inter-community service. The Legal & District Lions Transportation Committee offers a bus service for seniors and the handicapped.

Community Lifestyle

Recreation
The rolling topography surrounding Legal makes for excellent facilities for outdoor sports such as cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and hiking.

The focal point of Legal's recreation facilities is Citadel Park, a 12-acre area that houses an indoor arena, 4-sheet curling rink, baseball diamonds, outdoor arena,and playgrounds. Other local facilities include a day-use park and fish pond. The Legal Recreation Programs Committee administers Legal's recreational facilities and organizes a variety of programs such as minor hockey and minor baseball. This past summer a pilot project was started for weekly roller blading. The month of July also seen the summer playground in operation. The playground was open to children ages 4-7 in the morning and children ages 8-12 in the afternoon. They ofered arts, crafts, singing songs and lots more. The cost of this was very reasonable at $1.00 a day or $5.00 a week.

Special Annual Events/Attractions
Legal is home to "Fete Au Village", an annual festival held the last weekend in July, reviving the French culture of Legal's pioneers. This celebration, which started in 1962, brings together people of varied nationalities who work for the good of the community through organizations and clubs. People come from across Alberta to participate in the festivities and enjoy French-Canadian cuisine and hospitality, there is also a kiddies parade, chilli cook-off, town parade , many other activities including the demolition derby. The "Fete AU Village" takes place the last week in July every year so watch the local papers for more information on that.

Healthcare

The nearest hospital facilities are at St. Albert. Also, Capital Health Services provides a wide array of health and medical services to Legal residents, including medical clinics, preschool clinics, home care programs and public health inspections. Capital Health
offers traditional programs in neighbouring centres. The Associate Medical Clinic
operates in Legal each Monday and Thursday, they can be contacted at 961-3991.

Housing for the elderly is provided at the Chateau Sturgeon Senior Citizens' Home, a lodge funded by the Sturgeon Foundation which provides individual rooms for seniors not requiring extensive nursing care. Sunset and Sunrise Villa self-contained units are open to seniors who want to maintain their independence while not having to be responsible for the maintenance and repairs of a home.

Legal is pleased to have 9-1-1- as an emergency line. Legal is served by a volunteer fire department which services a 13 km radius of the Town

Legal is served by the Morinville detachment of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police [RCMP] [Tel: 780-459-7682].

Ambulance Services
The Legal Ambulance Service is staffed by volunteers and responds to emergencies within a 13 km radius of the Town
